Hiring in-house buys you long-term retention of knowledge. The developers internalise the business domain over time, and that knowledge remains inside the company. The catch shows up as slow hiring and vue vs react fixed overhead: recruiting a strong engineer takes months, ramping up takes several more weeks, and hire smm specialists the salary keeps running whether the roadmap is full or empty.

Handing a project to a vendor implies the vendor owns delivery: the provider staffs the team, the provider manages the plan, and they absorb the delivery risk. This fits well when the scope is reasonably clear and your side has an available product owner. It fails when nobody on your side owns the product, because a vendor is not able to invent your business rules.

Staff augmentation is the middle option: you rent capacity but keep the management on your side. It moves quickly — the right specialist can start far sooner than a new hire — and it scales down as easily as it scales up. The condition remains that your technical leaders need the capacity to direct the work. Without strong internal leadership, you end up paying hourly for uncoordinated work.

In practice, the models mix. A frequent arrangement puts the architecture and the core domain inside the company, while a partner takes on the parts that are bounded and specifiable. The line is simple enough: retain the parts that are hard to re-learn, and outsource the well-trodden work.

Three simple questions usually settle it. Start here: is what you are building a core competitive asset, or a cost centre? Then: how long will the work last — a quarter or a decade? Third: who will maintain it in two years? Answer these three honestly and the right arrangement becomes obvious.
